This movie has probably been one of the most anticipated films in comic book movie history as it features some of the most popular film franchise characters today (Iron Man, Thor, The Hulk and Captain America). That being said, the movie is everything a summer blockbuster is meant to be: light, entertaining and full of spectacle. I must admit going to see this film my expectations were quite low as history has shown time and time again that ensemble cast films can sometimes come off as confusing if not written and played well. Plus, big money spent on summer blockbusters does not always equal a great film (Transformers 2 and 3 anybody?). However, this movie has had close to four years to really introduce the audience to all of the main characters as they each had their own feature films leading up to the release of The Avengers.
Story:
Okay now for the fun stuff, the story! True to form, when a group of superheroes come together they have to battle a formidable enemy and in the comics the only thing that usually fits that bill is space aliens and a small deity or two. Most of the movie revolves around the group of heroes learning how to play nice with each other and put aside any egos any one of them brings to the table. Once that is done they save the world from the baddies and live happily ever after.
Special Effects:
The special effects in the film were excellent. Again, this was something I was not too sure about coming into the film. Reason being is both of the Hulk movies, although ground breaking special effect movies in their own right, still in my opinion could not make the big green guy look convincing on screen. The Avengers film seemed to seamlessly bridge that gap making him look believable (if a really big green guy could ever look real). There was only one portion of the film where I felt the actors looked like they were standing in front of a green screen with fans blowing in their face. Which I figure is quite forgivable since the rest of the movie was so masterfully done.
So Where Was God in the Movie?
I’m a firm believer that as a Christian if you dig deep enough in many films God can be found even if just a hint. The Avengers falls into the category of just a hint but the point still stands that He is there. In this movie, God is found in one of my favorite lines in the film which is delivered by Captain America who is played by Chris Evans. He is warned by Shield Agent Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) that he is about to go toe to toe with the god Loki. He replies to her, “There is only one God and he doesn’t dress like that.” In a time when the world abroad is pushing universalism and selling the idea that all paths lead to heaven that simple statement that there is one true God is HUGE. Once I heard that I wanted to stand up cheer and applaud but I could not because I was sitting in my small compact sedan at the drive-in theater watching the movie. If I would have acted on my impulse I would have wound up in the hospital with a concussion. Outside of that one brief line I did not catch anything else worth mentioning.
Final Thoughts
Overall the film was a lot of fun to watch and will leave the viewer excited about where the next movie will take them. I definitely suggest seeing it if you are into sci-fi action flicks. Please feel free to share your thoughts on this article. Until next time!
