With Valentine’s Day coming up soon, many people are going to be rushing to buy flowers and chocolate covered sweets for their loved one. But what do you do if you are single? There is no one to pour this type of affection on, nor receive the loving attention us singles see other friends and family get. We are bombarded with advertisements and commercials playing on the very ideal of romance, and it seems sometimes the only person single in your inner circle is you. And as you get older when you are not dating someone or married, it can be easy to feel awkward going to places like the theater, church, and out to eat with no one to sit next to and talk with. No one to hear about your day or have that romantic connection we are programmed in our nature to have. I have always been single on Valentine’s Day, and recently been single for over 2 years now.
So I bet you are wondering, how does a good looking guy like me keep the ladies at bay…right? Just joking, but really, what do you do when you get that lonely feeling as a single person? The first thing I would like to say is realize that if you are single, you are not alone. According to the Boston Globe, singles make more than 50% of all households in America. That means you are the majority! Even the apostle Paul who was single his whole life writes in 1 Corinthians 7:8, But I say to the unmarried and to the widows: It is good for them if they remain even as I am. (NKJ) The reason Paul writes this in Corinthians is because most Christians don’t realize when they are single, is that this is the best time to build their personal relationship with God. There are fewer distractions and emotional entanglements when you are single which means you can think clearer and go in the direction you feel God is taking you without hindrance. In 1 Corinthians 7:9 it says:
32 But I want you to be without care. He who is unmarried cares for the things of the Lord—how he may please the Lord. 33 But he who is married cares about the things of the world—how he may please his wife. 34 There is[a] a difference between a wife and a virgin. The unmarried woman cares about the things of the Lord, that she may be holy both in body and in spirit. But she who is married cares about the things of the world—how she may please her husband. 35 And this I say for your own profit, not that I may put a leash on you, but for what is proper, and that you may serve the Lord without distraction. (NKJ)
Secondly, don’t dwell on the thought of being by without a date or not married. If we spend a lot of time thinking of the few things we don’t have, then we forget the many good things we do have. Hang out with friends, pursue a career or start your own business, find or indulge a hobby, and enjoy your “me” time and freedom! If there is a dream you wish to pursue, now is the time to do it! You are the master of your decisions, because you only have to account for you. And who knows, in the process of following your destiny, you might run into your significant other sooner than you realize. Time flies when you are having fun, so don’t trouble yourself over being lonely.
But is it OK to marry? Yes it is and it is recommended! Paul also says in 1 Corinthians 7:9 but if they cannot exercise self-control, let them marry. For it is better to marry than to burn with passion.(NKJ) This means if you don’t have the gift to stay single, you can marry. I just recommend you keep these things in prayer and not to rush.
Now whether you are single or not, enjoy your Valentine’s Day as you would any day. For every day is a gift from God.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
Martin Luther King, Jr.
I was very curious to find out how Martin Luther King JR Day came to be recognized a national holiday, so I did a little research. I don’t know why I never thought to see how much work went into holiday. However, I always knew how important Civil Rights movement was and the sacrifice many people had to go through to ensure that all Americans would be treated equally.
Did you know that Martin Luther King JR day was signed in as a federal holiday by Ronald Regan in 1986 which was 18 years after King’s assassination? Did you know that this holiday was not observed by all 50 states until the year 2000? Why did it take so long for the nation to observe this holiday of such a great man who represented such a great cause?
Well, only two other people have U.S. holidays named after them. Christopher Columbus has Columbus Day and we also observe George Washington’s birthday which is sometimes referred to as President’s Day. The problem with recognizing another national holiday accredited to King was primarily the cost of having another paid holiday and some law makers didn’t feel that King was important enough to have a holiday named after him, especially since he didn’t hold an office.
Because of the lack of Federal support, the King Center turned to the public community. With the support of Stevie Wonder they collected 6 million signatures in petition to recognize Martin Luther King JR Day as a holiday at the Rally for Peace Press Conference in 1981. This was the largest petition in favor of any issue in U.S. history. That spawned the bill being introduced to Congress in 1983 and it passed overwhelmingly in 1986.
I challenge you now to learn one new thing about the Civil Rights movement. We need to remember the lives and the noble deeds of the people who made our country a much better place to live. To forget would be ungrateful and I am glad that we have Martin Luther King JR Day not just to remember King, but also one of the greatest movements in history!
On September 30, Root Road played 3 songs at a writer’s night house party hosted by Lara Landon in Nashville, TN. This event happens on Fridays and provides a friendly atmosphere for Christian artists of all backgrounds to share their talent with a captive audience of both spectators and other artists. Their was no shortage of talent that night, however, there was a shortage of space due to the large attendance. It was a full house…literally! Songs were sung, poems where read, and many snacks were consumed. Although the last performer ended near 10 pm, the fellowship, prayers, and songs flowed through the rest of the night. It was a refreshing experience for all to be able to be surrounded by such an collection of both talented and sincere people.

Wednesday June 22, the people of Franklin Tennessee got more than their coffee and local news when eating their breakfast…they got Root Road on the radio! The guys played live on WAKM 950 AM at about 8:30 that morning. The radio show was broadcast live on the radio and online from the conference room of Cadence Bank on East Main Street. Our host was none other than the outstanding Tom Lawrence. The guys were one of the first ones to arrive in the conference room, however, it didn’t take long for the rest of the office staff and special guests to fill the room completely. The atmosphere for friendly and full of laughter as everyone opened up with funny personal stories and shared about what they did in the area. After a few announcements and commercials, Root Road performed “By Your Side” acoustic with just a guitar, harmonica, and vocals. As the first chords where strummed by John and Nathanael blow softly through his harmonic, a quick hush filled the room as they guys played and sang melodically. The song was enjoyed so much that the guys were invited back to sing anytime and on the way home, the band received several positive texts from friends who tuned in.

On Monday March 28th, Root Road recorded a live show at Visions Studio in Nashville. This is where the “Bobby Jones Presents” television show is taped. The show Root Road taped was edited and first aired at the end of May on The Word Network which is viewed in 140 countries and to an audience of 70 million people. Needless to say, it was an amazing opportunity and the band’s music is being broadcast at a global level on TV for the first time! The guys received such rave reviews from the viewing audience, Dr. Bobby Jones himself called John’s (the guitarist and vocals) cell phone asking Root Road to play again at Visions Studio for an event called “Men Sing.” More details will be shared as they are released.
The atmosphere was friendly while Root Road was at the event. Before the show, Dr. Bobby Jones himself was walking around talking, taking pictures, and being hospitable to all who attended the taping. The studio itself was comfortable, having plenty of chairs and couches on the side. When the show started everyone took their seat as they listened to first class gospel music being performed by various signed and unsigned artists. Last group called to the stage was Root Road. The guys gave it their all for two songs and kept the crowd on their feet. They opened with “Taste And See” and closed with “By Your Side.” These songs can both be found on their “I Am Here” album available on iTunes, Amazon, CD Babby, and Reverb Nation.
After finishing, Dr. Jones came on stage and interviewed the guys. He gave great feedback saying things like “I like your music…it’s refreshing.” and “Follow me I make stars, they all come through me and here you are.” and “You got the look, you got the sound, you got talent, you got the spirit...”
